- Learn how to source and extract natural colours from foraged and cultivated plants in this Natural Dye Workshop with Ffion Taverner, a colour farmer, natural dyer and artist based in Pembrokeshire.
- This is the perfect workshop for those looking to explore natural dyeing within their creative practice. Ffion is here to share her wealth of knowledge with you and leave you feeling confident to take on natural dyeing at home.
- By the end of the day, you will have created a unique fabric collage with the naturally dyed fabric, which you can then use in a variety of ways such as a wall hanging, cushion cover, or in your garment making (see my Patchwork Garment Weekend).

What You’ll Learn at the Natural Dye Workshop
At our one day Natural Dye workshop you will learn the process of natural dyeing from experienced natural dyer, Ffion Taverner.
We’ll begin in the morning by learning how to extract colour from the dye stuff provided. We’ll be working with lots of flowers including African Marigolds, Coreopsis and Sulfur cosmos, as well as more traditional dye plants like Madder and Weld.
Next, we’ll be going through the process of preparing different fabrics, from plant based to animal fibres, and learning how mordants work with these differing fabrics. By working with different modifiers we will learn how to extend colour ranges, alter colours and generally see the magic in natural colour.
We’ll finish the workshop with some sewing, where you will develop your ideas and use your samples from the dye process in sewing, through creating patchworking and colour combinations. We will be providing all fabrics from cottons, linens and some felted wool for you to explore working with.
This natural dyeing session will be experimental and playful, as well as informative. We’ll explore immersion dyeing as well as bundle dyeing, and layering techniques and textures, leaving you with a brimming swatchbook full of naturally dyed goodness to go home with.
Spaces are limited to 7 participants per class to provide the ultimate learning experience
About Ffion Taverner
Ffion Taverner is an Artist, grower and facilitator specialising in Natural Dyes. She returned back to Pembrokeshire early last year to start an Organic Natural Dye farm and studio, just outside of Narberth called Hael Natural Colour.
She completed an Instructional Artist Residency specialising in Natural Dyes with Arquetopia in Peru in 2019. This delved into the tradition of colour within Peruvian culture, and Ffion has gone on to deepen her knowledge of Natural Colour in Ireland, Mexico, South America and The Netherlands, where she was working at the dye studio of artist Claudy Jongstra.
Ffion is passionate about sharing the endless possibilities of natural colour, and the magic it can bring; allowing folk to make with their hands and keep these historical skills going.
